From the beginning, Athena tries to help Odysseus return to his home in Ithaca. Athena the Greek goddess of wisdom favored Odysseus, for Odysseus was a great hero among the Greeks. Athena helps Odysseus by persuading Zeus to send Hermes to Calypso's island in hopes Calypso would let Odysseus go. Aiolos gives Odysseus a bag made from the skin of a nine year old ox and put inside the blustering winds. Odysseus and his men sail for nine days until Ithaca is in sight but his men get greedy thinking the bag is full of treasure. When his men opened the bag the wind blows out and sends Odysseus and his men all the way back to the Isle of Aiolos. In addition when Odysseus returns to Aiolos's island Aiolos says "Surely we did everything we could to help you, that you might return safely to your native land, or anywhere else you wanted to go"(Homer 121)? Aiolos tries to help Odysseus but his men keep ruining it. The bag of wind Aiolos gives Odysseus shows his respect for Odysseus, and the amount of respect and power Odysseus's name has.
