In The Gambia, aspects of their family life and traditions differ from those that are typical in the United States. They have three major family types: extended families, single families, and reconstructed families. However, the most common type of family is the extended family. The extended family typically consists of the grandparents, parents, and children. This way of living is common because the family members try to stay together for economic benefits such as inheritance.

It was common for the marriages to be arranged by the parents and the couple would have very little say so in the circumstances surrounding their marriage. The newly married couple would go to live with the husbands family; an extended family lifestyle.
In modern day China, marriage ceremonies have began to steer away from tradition. Much of the new generation has an independent mindset and chooses not to be confined to the many traditions within the Chinese culture. It is completely accepted to fall in love as one pleases and marry whomever one desires. Newly wedded couples prefer to live together on their own as it is much more accepted and preferred.
