In art, the artist’s personal experience matter because it would reflect on one’s ideas and reflect on one’s work. Knowing Frank Lloyd Wright’s prior design, and idea he hold on to, could help better understanding the Fallingwater.
Frank Lloyd Wright was born in a small town in Wisconsin, and developed early idea of architecture with toy building blocks that have geometrical shapes when he was a little. First let’s begin with great Roman architecture that was constructed in 70-80 AD----the Colosseum. (Image 1). This building have strong influence on us today, such building structure had been used as model for many sport stadium. It is significant in Architecture not only because it is the first building in history where concrete was used for construction, but also the thoughtful detail choice that the architect made. As shown in the image 2 and 3, the building had divided into different section and level to maximize its utility, and serve better function. Falling Water, as well, have numerous level, and sectioned out to better serve, and fit into the nature. However, the technique used was dramatically different. While the Colosseum kept the uniform of the outer wall and create section through space created by the use of the concrete on the interior, the level of the Falling Water are shown on the outside, the interiors was rather uniformed. Both of the architect considered their choice on the both aspect of function, and esthetic quality. The perfect ratio rounded shape of the the Colosseum created a powerful flawless goddess look. Also, choice of concrete added to a better function, and maximize people’s experience inside the architecture. The section inside the concrete add more utility to the space.
