Literary Craft: In medias res

What is in medias res? This term, translated from Latin, literally means “into the middle things.” It is used as a form of a narrative hook where the story begins right in the middle of the action. Flashbacks are often included throughout the linear storyline to provide the reader with a bit of backstory so they might fully understand what is presently occurring in the narrative.

Beginning a story in medias res is a technique that I admire and often like to project into my own writing. (As evidenced by my first workshopped chapter.)

Two examples:

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

This story begins in the middle of Nick and Amy Dunne’s failing marriage. On the day of their fifth wedding anniversary, Amy goes missing

Even though Amy admits to us (at the beginning of part two) that she had to forge these as evidence that Nick would be capable of murder, she also says that the first part where “Nick and Amy fell in love” were mostly based on true events and feelings.

The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick

This story opens in the middle of Pat’s continued struggle to accept that his marriage is over. Before the book’s narrative begins, Pat and his estranged wife, Nikki, suffered from an extreme, violent instance that managed to land Pat in a psychiatric hospital. He refers to this time away from his wife as “apart time.” In the first chapter, Pat decides to leave the hospital and go home with his parents. He believes he has resided at the hospital only for a few months, when in reality, he has been there for years.

The chapter is titled, “An Infinite Amount of Days Until My Inevitable Reunion with Nikki.”

“Once again, Mother has found me in my bathrobe, exercising unattended in the courtyard, and I smile because I know she will yell at Dr. Timbers, asking him why I need to be locked up if I’m only going to be left alone all

The earth beneath their feet had long since morphed into oozing, black mud that sucked at their feet and legs. The pounding of artillery shells, the booming of massive guns, the sharp crack of rifles, and the smell of gunpowder were without pause. Blood-splattered bodies were sprawled on the trenches. The screams of agony and the earth-shattering crashes of shells would be enough to drive even the most stalwart to insanity.…

Tim O’Brien has outstandingly portrayed what the life of a soldier in and out of the Army during the Vietnam War is in his own distinctive way of fictional writing. O’Brien is especially known for this book because of the way he switched from a narrative to a conversational writing style. In The Things They Carried, O’Brien constantly uses multiple literary devices to make his remarkable war stories seem as if the reader were actually there to experience the situation for themselves. Throughout the story, O’Brien tends to use symbolism to explain his short stories. Also, scattered through the stories dark satire can be found, which makes these stories a bit more intriguing.…

Dr. Mraovic-O’hare, As I previously discussed on a classmate post, Nick has been manipulating Amy from the beginning of their marriage. He wanted Amy to be someone who she was not (even though that is how she presented herself at the beginning for their relationship), as you stated, Nick dragged Amy to Missouri to save his mother, but unfortunately it was too late; lastly, Nick ‘convinces’ Amy to use the last of her trust fund to open his bar. Moreover, Nick had control of Amy by her insecurities, which she outlines her complains in one of her monologues, “…Being the cool girl means I am hot, brilliant, funny woman, who adores football, poker, dirty jokes, and pburping, who plays video games, drinks cheap beer, loved threesomes and anal sex,…

In Aldous Huxley’s novel, Brave New World, he uses many different topics and literary devices to convey to the reader social issues that are occurring in the 1930s and how they compare to the new society formed in the State World. Some of the elements that Huxley uses to describe the government control over the citizens by brainwashing and drug dependency are precise diction, vivid imagery, and figurative language. He then uses these devices to show the moral and cultural decay in the New World. The theme of Brave New World is the pursuit of happiness through extreme ideals and use of drugs which helps play a factor in aiding the reader to understand what social issues are occurring throughout the novel.…

Another example of a cliffhanger is when Joe, in the first chapter, finally begins to explain what catastrophe he had been hinting about since the very start, “At the base of the balloon…. was a man in need of help”. He then changes the subject without giving the reader the entire story with the next paragraph describing a completely different event, compelling the reader to read further. The use of cliffhangers encourages readers to emerge themselves into the story further and deepen their connections to the characters, in order to be able to speculate on the outcome of what is yet to…
