Even though Hassan is weaker then Assef and his friends, he’s managed to stand up to them multiple times. One example of this is in chapter 5 of The Kite Runner when Amir and Hassan first encounter Assef and his friends. Assef is bullying Amir and Hassan, and takes out his brass knuckles. As he is about to hit Amir, Hassan takes out his slingshot and aims it at Assef. This is very brave since Assef is much stronger then Hassan, and this move would make Assef even angrier at him in the future. But he does it to save his friend Amir. In the seventh chapter of The Kite Runner, Hassan is cornered by Assef and his gang after he gets the final kite in the kite flying tournament. Assef tells him that he’ll let him go if he gives him the blue kite. Hassan refuses to give him the kite, since he ran it and got it fairly. Many would give in to Assef’s demands, but Hassan chooses to be brave and say no. He faces the consequences after, but he did the brave thing to save his kite for Amir.
