Women are often labeled as either feminine figures who are delicate and quiet or overbearing, masculine figures who are assertive and strong. Tilly showed everyone that all people have many layers to their personality regardless of their gender. This play communicated to me that feminine qualities such as empathy, vulnerability, and beauty relate to all humans and that femininity is simply a made up ideology of our culture. This applies to masculine qualities as well such as competitiveness, aggressiveness, and assertiveness which all exist to assist men in proving their dominance over women and other men in the home, at work, and in all aspects of life. These labels will in fact be harmful for both men and women. The words ‘feminine’ and ‘masculine’ are meant to be used as archetypes not stereotypes. Even so, these archetypes are constructed in a way that appeals to the dominance of men and inferiority of women. These words have allowed people to be put in a masculine or feminine box that causes them to suppress some of their true qualities in order to fit the expectations associated with their gender.
