This earthquake had shown the unpredictable behavior and patterns of it, just like the earthquake on May 1th, 2008 in Sichuan, Western China. What seems to be a simple question for our technological capability but science still hasn’t found the answer: When can we predict the next big earthquake? We are now in the transition stage from the age of scientific discovery to the age of scientific mastery, in which we will be able to predict and manipulate nature. And I believe, in the next year, with the development of frontier technologies, geologists will be able to reliably predict the location and intensity of earthquakes.
Geologists have been hard-working ever since, they had discovered the fundamental structure and composition of the Earth itself, and earthquake is one of the most intensive investigated phenomenal. Earthquakes have killed over a million people and cause …show more content…
Earthquake is not just simply cause by the motion and composition of the Earth. There are so many other variable that as we might not be able to comprehend. For example, people claim on “the Butterfly effect”, in which one tiny change in earth system could also affect the outcome of an event. This is not false accusation, in many field of sciences, like quantum physics for example, a small act of measurement could change the whole outcome and result of an experiment. But instead of giving up, physicist take advantage of such effect and find out the pattern of behavior, in which fundamentally for quantum mechanics, certainty is impossible but the quantum world is ruled by probability. This fundamental law is the foundation of today electrical communication, digital computer, microprocessors, etc. Understanding the behavior of particles help us to control them, little by little. And I think I should be the same with geology, the Earth system is very complex, it contains so many unaccountable variables but with dedication, I believe one day we will find a way like we also do to comprehend such knowledge. Maybe it’s a little optimistic to expect for an accurate way to predict earthquake in the next ten years. Despite of all the on-going effort, many seismologists gave up on finding new method but focusing on earthquake preparation instead. Understandably, most of
