The Foster School of Business at the University of Washington is one of the most prestigious public business schools in the Nation. Foster’s goal is to inspire greatness in all of its students through ample opportunities, experienced staff, and challenging coursework. After the competitive application process, students enter the school with high expectations of excellence placed upon them. These expectations push students to perform in ways that stretches their thinking and makes them better prepared for the world outside of UW. The curving system could create time pressure and work responsibility among students; this type of stressor is called challenge and is considered good because it increases performance if managed properly. Students could also experience another type of stressor, such as role ambiguity or overload, which are hindrances and lead to a strain and possibly burnout. Statistics show that 86% of college students have felt overwhelmed, 30% have felt too depressed to function, and 6.6% have seriously considered suicide1. Students at Foster have courses with a large amount of group projects and assignments. The curving system makes them want to exceed their classmates in order to be in a higher tier and therefore receive a better grade, which could potentially add additional stress to their college lives. Too much stress due to high demand of work, group projects, and grade competition could act as a hindrance and impact students’
