Today I share the story of how America uses its imperialistic powers against the democratic ideals that America advocates for. As the frontiers closes in 1890 in the United States of America the feeling of manifest destiny, and American exceptionalism still exist. Interventionist in America feel that it is their destiny to guide other countries such as the Philippines into the right path because they are the chosen people. Interventionalists want to spread democratic ideals to other countries. US president McKinley declared war against Spain in 1898 and as a result gains imperialistic control of the of the Philippines in Southeast-Asia. As General Reeve, Colonel of the Thirteenth Minnesota Regiment, said “I deprecate this war, this slaughter of our own boys and of the Filipinos, because it seems to me that we are doing something that is contrary to our principles in the past. Certainly we are doing something that we should have shrunk from not so very long ago.”. Even the voices of American generals are not being considered as they oppose the imperialist ruling too and how it is undemocratic to suppress Filipino voices. Besides the actual people fighting in the war many American isolationists oppose American ruling. Jacob G. Shurman the president of Cornell University recognises that the US are not listening to the people. He is sent out to understand Filipino political views and sees that their voices not being heard as no political policies change, which a clear violation in a democracy; not listening to the voice of the people.
