As broad as Noddings argues the current purpose of education is (338), I feel that arguing happiness to be the purpose of education is just as broad and too rash of an answer. In order to keep up with the aims of society, we must expose our students to the issues and problems, allow them to ask questions, and decide what is right and wrong to them. This can lead to more than happiness or economic success, but the ability to be responsible, accountable, and a contributing member of our rapidly changing society. When deeper communication and thinking is allowed students begin to see the purpose and importance of it. The idea of having a constant flow of ideas between teacher and student pinpoints what Freire means by liberation. Allowing students to hold themselves at the same level of accountability of their teachers mean they will take the assignments and problems they are presented with more seriously. This is a skill that will follow them as they grow older and face problems in their own lives and community. By being taught that it is not only okay to question your world, but necessary in order to reach a certain degree of freedom, students will develop a new perspective on their world in and out of the classroom.
Lowry’s novel The Giver follows a similar tune, as she shares Jonas’ story the reader sees the importance of questioning and discussion in forming a just society. Jonas’ community follows the banking method and questioning others is one of the worst things that can be done. When Jonas is exposed to both the good and the bad that has been kept from his community, he feels the urgency to rise to action. Jonas wants to force his community into having a more open conversation, where they face their problems rather than just ignore them
