‘Cult’ refers to a social group that is defined by their religious, spiritual, philosophical beliefs, or common interests in a specific person, idea, object, or goal.
Cult shares common traits with the words culture and cultivate. It originally comes from the Latin term cultus which is a noun meaning tilling, cultivation, training, education, or adoration. In English, cult evolved into a meaning of worship, dating back to the 17th century. Later, the term began to define a specific branch or religion or rites/practices. In the Early 18th century, cult could be referred to a non-religious admiration/devotion of a person, idea, or fad.
