Dual Language Development

Dual Language Learners are often identified as children, who acquire two or more languages simultaneously, or they may learn a second language while continuing to develop their first language. This term encompasses many other terms within such as Limited English Proficient (LEP), bilingual children, English Language Learners (ELL), and the children who speak a language other than English (LOTE). Development for dual language learners requires attention to be focused on four main domains:
1. Social-emotional development.
2. Cognition and general development.
3. Language, literacy and communication.

Secure attachment is where we see maternal sensitivity and awareness to the child signals, and instant and accurate maternal responsiveness to the child’s needs. Whereas insecure attachment we observe maternal inconsistency and ignoring perceptions and inaccurate and inappropriate responses. It is stressed that children definitely learn a lot through relationships and closeness from people who care for them and love them on their day-to-day experiences. Despite attachment being universal, a study by Keller 2008 indicates that the distribution of security attachment has been found to differ between different ethnic and socio cultural groups. For Instance a study by the ECLS suggests that Latinos and African American children are less likely to have secure attachments when compares to Asians and toddlers from Spanish speaking homes are 22% less likely to be securely attached than English speaking …show more content…
It is noticeable that bilingual children’s first words in each language serve the purpose of social functions followed by nouns then verbs. With increases of vocabulary size the proportion of vocabulary that consists of social function words and nouns decreases and the proportion of vocabulary accounted for by verbs increases. Young bilinguals first speak in single word utterance, then combine content words and begin to acquire the words and word endings that serve grammatical functions. Within this category it is encouraged that teachers create or develop a Personalized Oral Learning Language (POLL), which basically consists of family language and interests interview, this will help teachers have a broader perspective of the language spoken at home, the culture associated with it, it will help know the interests of the child and it would definitely help a better home-school
