What is stress? Stress is what your body feels when you’re faced with a situation that you can’t handle in a proper manner, or when you feel threatened. Reading the aforementioned definition, one will realize that we encounter stressful situations on a daily basis. After procrastinating for a week, you decided to complete your assignment just before it’s due by a few hours. The anxiety and panic you are feeling is the result of stress. You are going to pick up your fiancée, as you are driving you remember that it is her birthday and you forgot to bring her a gift; this type of stress you are feeling is called acute stress. When confronted with a difficult situation, the way your brain perceives it depends solely on your attitude. Meaning, if you thought that you will get through that troubling situation, you will not stress; but if you did there is no possible way to know what the outcome will be. The outcome varies from one person and another. One might utilize his stress as a motivation to get through anything, while another might panic and accomplish nothing. If you asked a friend to walk up to someone and converse with them, would he do it? One of the many reasons people are afraid to walk up to strangers and start a casual conversation with them is that they feel self-conscious. They do not know how the stranger will respond, however, their mind tricks them into believing that this is a dangerous situation for them; this leads them to stress and either decline or converse in an awkward manner. There are many other internal stress triggers like setting high expectations and indecisiveness (The Different Kinds of Stress, 2009). Being indecisive is an indication to low self-esteem, and low self-esteem leads to chronic stress as it is the way you perceive yourself.
