This quote stated by Willy Loman basically means that a person cannot be used up and then thrown away. He says this to Howard out of frustration because he desperately needs a job that does not require to travel, but rather, an office like job that pays. In this quote, the orange represents a young and healthy man that is efficient, and can work properly. Willy portrays that back in the days where he was a middle aged man working for Howard’s dad. The orange being eaten means that Willy has been used up by the company that Howard owns. The peel presents the idea of him being discarded by Howard because he is too old to be working. His father leaving him is evident in the quote “Where is Dad? Didn’t you follow him? How did you get started?” From this quote, it is strikingly obvious that Willy was left with many unanswered questions, leading to becoming the most desperate character in the whole play. Willy’s brother, Ben, fails to take care of Willy due to his ambition being finding his father, and so Willy never had a role model to look up to. Willy was never given advice on how to look at life properly, what are the goals you need in order to be successful, nothing of that sort. While he was growing up, it is evident that Willy assumed that success can be achieved through being a prominent figure. Even though it is achieved through hard work, dedication, and sacrifice. Willy is unable to grasp that idea due to the lack of guidance from his family, and therefore he lives in a delusional world where his ideals and goals are completely
