Romeo and Juliet are no different in this, which can be especially seen with Juliet in her candidly sexual soliloquy as she wonders, “Oh, I have bought the mansion of a love, But not possessed it, and though I am sold, Not yet enjoyed. So tedious is this day As is the night before some festival To an impatient child that hath new robes And may not wear them.” (III. ii. 26-31) She is complaining that she has yet to experience the “joys” of a married relationship, and impatiently awaits Romeo and begs the night to come sooner so they can be together until morning. Although this is something appropriate for a newlywed wife to say, considering she only met Romeo the day before, it seems she’s moving a bit fast and is making decisions based on sexual desire, rather than being with him for the sake of being together. Likewise, as said in an article by Judith Orloff, “Lust is an altered state of consciousness programmed by the primal urge to procreate. Studies suggest that the brain in this phase is much like a brain on drugs.” (Page 1) The two are acting based on sensual emotion, attraction and impulse, which all happen to be associated with lustful feelings; furthermore, acting on impulse isn’t exactly an uncommon theme in the play.
