“The North Wind and the Sun”, which is translated by V.S. Vernon Jones is a story about the wind and the sun arguing over which one was stronger. They both spotted a man who was traveling on the road and challenged each other to see who would be able to remove his coat the quickest. The Wind shows that by being demanding and fast you aren’t always going to get your way and the Sun shows that by being slow and steady that you are likely to make a bigger difference. As stated in the story “How did you do that” said the Wind. “It was easy”, said the Sun, “I lit the day.…
Throughout the short story “The Weather” by Deborah Willis there are many present themes, perhaps the most common and recurring one is how people can affect each other and their relationships, and how fast they can change between “passion and sweetness and sadness.” The ever changing relationships between the three main characters Edith, Braden, Rae and even Nina, the non-existent mother, are a constant drama throughout the story. The changes between Edith and her father is ever-changing, in the beginning her hostility towards her father is increasingly present when Braden, her father recalls how she said to her mother after the storm “Even then, she used that cold tone. “He’s here, mom.…
Ann Petry, the author of The Street a Novel, does a fantastic job of setting up the overall feeling of the book in the first chapter, by utilizing detailed descriptions and comparisons as well as personifying ‘a cold November wind’ in an interesting way. The dictionary defines personification as “the attribution of human nature or character to animals, inanimate objects, or abstract notions, especially as a rhetorical figure” (Dictionary.com). In this particular instance, the wind is a blockade for Lutie, the main character, in her goals at the very beginning of the novel. On top of being a blockade for Lutie, the November winds are foreshadowing a lot of the themes in the novel; nothing is easy for her especially in regards to relationships and financial status throughout the rest of the novel. The wind “even blew her eyelashes away from her eyes so that her eyeballs were bathed in a rush of coldness and she had to blink in order to read the words on the sign swaying back and forth,” (Petry 2) the wind is activley attempting to prevent her from even determining exactly where she is, it’s hard to even get started if she doesn’t know where she’s going.…

Comparing 'Storm on the Island' and 'Exposure' Both poets portray nature as powerful and something which cannot be controlled by man. In both poems the weather contributes to the overall effect on the reader. In 'Exposure' Owen uses weather to achieve effect at the beginning of the poem with the quotes: 'the merciless iced east winds' , 'mad gusts tugging' and 'clouds sag stormy'. These quotes set a theme for the rest of the poem, of pain, suffering and anticipation.…
The author achieves the latter by having the farm and the weather symbolise Frome’s relationship with his wife. In his flashback, Ethan’s farm has “an orchard of starved apple-trees writhing over a hillside,” the soil dotted with “outcroppings of slate” (17). Not only do the trees remain bare and fruitless throughout the year, but even the soil is inhospitable—unable to sustain or give any life. Fallen decrepit from lack of attention, the apple orchard symbolises their seven year marriage, lonely, barren, and childless.…

Weathermen, often referred to as weather underground, were a militant radical left wing group in the 60’s that sought to overthrow the U.S. government and tried to get their point across by bombing government property such as bathrooms in places like the pentagon, state department building and more. They were part of the “counterculture” idea which went against cultural norms and rules. Even though the weatherman brought a lot of attention to the counterculture movement by taking action and making their bold statement, they gave counterculture a bad name, they used very violent ways to get their point across that might not have been necessary, and in the end they didn't achieve anything. The Weathermen gave the counterculture movement a bad…

Rain is also described as a foreshadowing of death as cain says” The only way that Frederic can bring Catherine Barkley back to life, touching her hand again and feeling the thrill and sexual excitement is through telling the story in which ultimately she dies, he remembers her as he caused her death. ”(cain 377).
