Booker T. Washington was born April 5, 1856 as a slave. Washington first discovered his love for education when he was working as a slave and saw a school. When he looked into the window he saw many children sitting at desks with books on their table. As time went on his mother bought Washington his very first book. When Washington read this book he knew how much he appreciated education. Many African-Americans looked up to booker T. Washington as a leader in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. WEB Du Bois was a successful man as he made many valid points to society. Du Bois was very gifted when it came to education. Du Bois received a full scholarship to Fisk University in Tennessee and later went to Harvard where he graduated with his B.A. Du bois started directing conferences where he could explain the living conditions for African American. Furthermore he published a couple books and became the editor for the NAACP magazine. Du Bois believed that life behind the veil of race resulted to double- consciousness, which is a sense of always looking through someone else’s eyes.
