➢ #1 Reason to Support the Common Core: PPT 2 CCSS Shifts - Reading rather than focusing solely on the skills of reading and writing, the ELA/literacy standards highlight the growing complexity of the texts students must read to be ready for the demands of college, career, and life. Rather than asking students questions they can answer solely from their prior knowledge and experience, the standards call for students to answer questions that depend on their having read the texts with care. The reading standards focus on students' ability to read carefully and grasp information, arguments, ideas, and details based on evidence in the text. It also promotes creative and critical thinking over memorization, and prepares students with the collaboration,…
Because of this low level of performance in education, the United States sought improved measures over the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2002 (Peterson, & Kaplan, 2013). It was projected that with the NCLB Act, students would be proficient in subjects such as math and reading no later than 2014. Thus, the Common Core State Standards was created by a collaboration of “the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers, with the financial backing of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the political support of the U.S. Department of Education” (Peterson, & Kaplan, 2013, p.…
Since CCSS’s standards started at a college level, and then worked their way down the standards can be perceived as college professors saying what students’ should or should not learn throughout their educational careers. However, many groups were involved in the development of the standards. Therefore, the standards were not solely based on what colleges are looking for in their incoming students. In response to these claims Education Digest published an article saying, “NGA and CCSSO led the initiative [of writing Common Core] with the guidance of an advisory group including experts from Achieve, Inc., a bipartisan, nonprofit organization that helps states raise academic standards; ACT, Inc.; the College Board; the National Association of State Boards of Education; and the State Higher Education Executive Officers Association.” (Understanding the CCSS standards, 2014, p. 17)…
In 2008, the Hunt Institute for Educational Leadership and the National Governors Association organized a meeting to discuss new education standards for the United States (Common Core Timeline). From that conference came the idea of the Common Core State Standards Initiative, often shortened to “Common Core.” About one year later, the United States officially adopted the education guidelines (Common Core Timeline). After the Common Core’s implementation, American parents and educators realized how problematic the standards could become, particularly the mathematics. Common Core math standards set a developmentally complex curriculum, lack college-preparatory mathematics, and can eventually hinder U.S. competition with the rest of the world.…
Common Core is a state standards initiative developed with the purpose of preparing America’s students for college and career (Common Core State Standards Initiative, 2015). The Common Core Preamble states,” The Common Core State Standards define the rigorous skills and knowledge in English Language Arts and Mathematics that need to be effectively taught and learned for students to be ready to succeed academically in credit-bearing, college-entry courses and in workforce training programs” (Common Core State Standards Initiative, 2015). Common Core boasts that in May 2009 they began by creating the college and career ready standards through a process of backtracking from skills sought in universities to kindergarten. Common Core State Standards…
One could pick any number of laws and make a case as to why they believe it is, or is not, the answer to solve our country’s constant problem of falling behind in the classroom. The newest addition to the list is the Common Core State Standard, also referred to as the CCSS. The CCSS is a necessary addition to the sphere of education, based on the lack of measurable standards that presently exist. In 2009, the National…
The Common Core State Standards Initiative, simply referred to as Common Core, is an education reform that has been accepted in 45 U.S. states. The Common Core Initiative was developed between 2006 and 2010, and was intended to replace current state standards (Kornhaber, Griffith, and Tyler 3). Common core was put in place to align school curriculums across the country, to allow standardized testing to be implemented. With standardized testing put into place, it allows government to look at these test scores and determine which schools are in need of corrective actions. The original aim for the Common Core Standards was to provide all students with equal educational opportunities and resources.…
Though there are many good arguments on both sides of this issue and the evidence does not conclusively show that the Common Core State Standards are a solution to the nations concerns with low achievement, I believe that the CCSS is an overall valuable guide to planning and implementing curriculum. These standards are at the least a good starting point. This does not mean, however, that every state or every district should implement the CCSS without modification, but it is a solid model that each state would do well to utilize as a skeleton for their body of curriculum. A Great…
Common core is a set of high-quality standards in mathematics and English language arts/literacy (ELA). The standards outline what each student should know and…
In a recent article Dr. Brooke A. Burks stated, “Both those who support and oppose the Common Core Standards generally agree with the main objective: prepare students to compete in the ever-changing job market and global economy”, proving that all in all, Common Core is a beneficial plan (Burks). There seem to be three central goals of The Common Core Standards; prepare students for college or other jobs, help develop critical thinking, and having an equal, common set of standards nationwide. The set of standards will help with the students’ critical thinking skills. The new set of tests makes students think deeper and use problem solving skills to answer the questions.…
V. WHAT COMES NEXT? In regards to CCSS, there are certain steps to be taken for this issue and any other reform in the future. First, America’s public must be educated about reasons for standards in education regardless of what they are called. People have a right to be a part of a process and should elect representatives based on who will get the job done without bias.…
Common Core: The Strings Behind the Puppet Rome wasn’t built in a day, neither destroyed in just one, this abides the case behind Common Core too, it wasn’t built in a day and it can’t just be eschewed at once. Although, the government expectations over these standards act as the only element stopping a majority of the population of eating alive each piece of the program until it remains completely gone. Until this moment arrives, expectations continue to last related to whatever sort of progress in the students that stands as exceptional enough for governmental entities to rub it in every person’s faces. That one broadcast or article regarding a strange teenager in either Texas or Ohio that managed to reach the MIT thanks to the obvious work…
The issue over the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) has increased significantly over the past few years. The CCSS are the set of shared goals and expectations for the knowledge and skills students need to master in English language arts and mathematics. This is required at each grade level so they can be prepared to succeed in college, career, and life. The problem isn’t primarily what is in these standards or what’s been left out, although that’s certainly an issue. The main focus is the role the Common Core State Standards are playing in the larger dynamics of current school reform and education politics.…
The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are probably the biggest thing to hit public education in the United States in recent years (Neuman & Roskos, 2013). Common Core has left one group largely in the dark; parents (Neuman & Roskos, 2013). Only forty-five percent of public school parents had heard of Common Core (Obrien, 2014). This is only hearing about it, and does not include understanding what it is. Since parents do not understand Common Core, they have a lot of misunderstandings.…
Ever since the new Common Core education standards were introduced in 2009, there has been a massive debate over whether it is really benefiting students or simply resulting in various negative effects on many different aspects of the student. There has been an overwhelming amount of backlash on the new standards from students, parents, and even teachers and authoritative figures in the world of education. Despite the not-so-positive views that exist concerning Common Core, there have been some people that believe it is the best way for students to be educated. There is a great amount of ways in which Common Core is improving the way children are taught and how they are learning, yet the vast majority of evidence shows that these new standards…
