Relationships In Pride And Prejudice Analysis

Throughout Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen gives many examples of common problems that can come between a relationship; She uses Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy to show possible problems that could occur during the 19th century and what has to be done to overcome them. She begins the novel by focusing on first impressions. Both Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy have a unpleasant first meeting. As both characters start to see more of each other, they have to be flexible thinkers in order to communicate. By communicating, Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy have to learn to compromise and use discernment. Darcy’s ability to be flexible thinkers influence their relationship by causing them to rationalize ideas differently and eventually cause them to accept each other. Austen suggests that a strong relationship entails good communication, and grounded morals which are essential in order to be able to cooperate. In Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth demonstrates that tolerance, acceptance, and an open mind is the cause for the development of a strong relationship. As Elizabeth reflects on the letter she had just read, her eyes are opened as she see’s the truth of Mr. Darcy’s words about Mr. Wickham and as she imagines him, it was difficult for her to see him “no more substantial(ly) good than the general approbation of the neighbourhood” (135-136). Austen suggests that if Elizabeth was not open minded about what Mr. Darcy had said, it would have made it much more difficult for their relationship to progress forward. Jane Austen uses Mr. Darcy to demonstrate the effects society’s opinions can cause; She uses Mrs. Reynolds to open a new direction of opinions about Mr. Darcy in order to break the critical label society gave him. Mrs. Reynolds holds Mr. Darcy is the highest esteem, claiming that “he is the best landlord, and the best master, that ever lived” and that he is not like the other men his age that think self-absorbed (161). Darcy have to be able to use good discernment and be able to compromise in order for their relationship to progress. Jane Austen suggests that in order for a relationship to work there must be good judgement and agreement. In the letter from Mr. Darcy in the novel, Mr. Darcy is forward thinking and believes that he knows what will make a good or bad marriage. In Mr. Darcy’s letter, he states that he did not come between Jane and Mr. Bingley’s relationship solely because of the inadequate passion that he saw, but because a “connection” is important in a marriage (130). Jane Austen uses Mr. Darcy to show what friends will do too look out for each other. Because Mr. Darcy believed that Mr. Bingley would make a big mistake if he did marry into the Bennet family. This scene is demonstrating that a marriage is not done because of passion but because of social status and money. Mr. Darcy struggles with balancing his feelings due to his pride, but he eventually compromises because of his genuine love for Elizabeth. Mr. Darcy confesses to Elizabeth because of how much he has struggled with keeping his feelings repressed (125). Mr. Darcy had to leave his pride in order to enter a state of vulnerability in order to do so. Although Darcy is willing to take a risk in proposing to Elizabeth, he is devastated when she rejects his first proposal and continues to prove himself to her.
