Socrates replies that a person should, “be afraid of the criticism and welcome the praise of the one qualified person, but not those of the general public.” (Crito, 47b). While Machiavelli believes that a leader should value the opinions of the public rather than other nobles, Socrates thinks that it is smarter for someone to prioritize the thoughts and opinions of others who are qualified in your field, rather than those of the public as they can be foolish and flawed. Due to the contrasting views of Socrates and Machiavelli on whose criticism and…

Certainly, Delbanco agrees with Socrates view of philosophy as a form of the liberal arts, since it the liberal arts education provided a wide variety of literature, philosophical viewpoints, and other cultural; options for the student to evaluate and critically analyze in higher education. Socrates defines the significance of critical thinking, logic, and reasoning as a basis for creating a “whole person” that make his or her own decisions related to self-identity through philosophical analysis. Socrates is arguing in favor of the process of philosophical examination, so that the individual can make informed decision about the beliefs and values that they want to practice in life. Without a framework for critical thought, the student cannot know the different options and pathways they can choose. Socrates provides an important example of how philosophy can break down ethical beliefs, morals, and questions about theology as a way to expand the mind of the individual in the context of liberal arts…

One of Socrates progressive ideas was that he was not materialistic and did not lust after money or power. Socrates boldly claims “in my investigation of the service of the god I found that those who had the highest reputation were nearly the most deficient, were nearly the most deficient, while those who thought to be inferior were more knowledgeable” (25). This brazen quote rejects the common notion that those of wealth and prestige who hold the power of Athens are the ones who are superior in knowledge. Socrates, in his search for truth, compares the politicians to craftsmen in this quote. For when he investigated the claim that he is the wisest, Socrates compared the lowly craftsman to the powerful politician and found that the craftsman were wiser than those who held power.…

Pain and Gain: The Relationship between the Philosopher and the City In 1920, Warren G. Harding won the presidential election with the slogan “Return to Normalcy” (“Presidential Campaign Slogans” 1). Although referring to returning to the life style before the horrid World War I, Harding’s campaign highlights an interesting point: People resist change. In the Apology of Socrates, Socrates strongly challenges the city through philosophy, but in Crito, he submits to the laws of the city because it is ultimately the just thing to do. Because Socrates challenges the laws, he is sentenced to death, so it is not easy for Socrates to be a philosopher. In addition, Athens has a difficult reaction to philosophy.…

This is made especially apparent in the Apology when Socrates is attempting to figure out why the Delphi said that there was no man wiser than Socrates himself. After hearing this, Socrates proceeded to seek out politicians, poets, and craftsmen in order to question them and determine what makes him more knowledgeable than each of them in the eyes of the Oracle at Delphi. He systematically interrogates the politicians, poets, and craftsmen. Socrates goes on the conclude that the politicians were imposters and really did not know as much as he had expected them to. Also he discovered that not only did they lack knowledge outside of politics, they struggled to comprehend politics themselves although they acted like they knew everything.…

In Plato’s dialogue Apology, Socrates stands trail to defend himself from the accusations of “corrupting the youth” and disregarding the Gods of the state. In his speech he tells the jury that an oracle at Delphi told Chaerephon a friend of Socrates that Socrates is a man of wisdom and no man is wiser than he is. To prove this cannot be true Socrates conducts cross examinations to find someone who is wiser than he is. Through these examinations Socrates mission and main points are to help people by exposing their ignorance to find wisdom, to find virtue, to find truth and to improve the soul.…

An unusually fragile underclassman: devoid of faith and fearful of a new environment brimming with the cold embrace of the unknown. “What do you like about yourself?” Sitting in the audience, listening to an assembly during my freshman orientation of high school, this existential question hit me like a tidal wave—initially destructive yet ultimately metamorphic. Those around me blessed with a wealth of confidence from a young age beamed with vanity: athletes, scholars, musicians and those exceptionally precocious few with the ability to thrive in multiple environments.…

Wladyslaw Szpilman and Socrates were both men of great wisdom and knowledge who led lives filled with sorrow due to the ignorance of the masses. Szpilman had his family torn from him and his lustrous career as a pianist destroyed by the Nazi army. Socrates is one of the greatest philosophers ever to live and his life was cut sadly short by the fear of the Greek government. In light of the tremendous injustices faced by each man, Socrates best expressed “humility as the starting point of ethics”. Socrates’ wisdom came from his humility, he was humble enough to admit that, as humans, we are not wise; people just give off the illusion that they are wise.…

My interest in communications dates back to elementary school, though I didn’t recognize it as such at the time. I had always been fascinated with sharing ideas and opinions. I spent years on the debate team, and found joy in typing key points across countless index cards. Any possible argument and counter-argument was concisely outlined and neatly filed in an old brown recipe box festooned with sparkly stickers. I was equally happy being ‘pro’ or ‘con’, much to the chagrin of my family when I couldn’t contain rebuttals to the classroom.…

Socrates uses the dialectic to push people to increase their knowledge and wisdom. Whether they will continue the dialectic and pursue excellence is their choice. Like gadflies sting sluggish horses, Socrates awakens citizens from ignorant slumber through examination. The Apology also serves as a gadfly to the reader; we are pushed to examine our life and pursue the good. However, we should not wait or outright…
