If Life Were Different

I grew up in a small family. There are 4 of us: me, my mother, father, and brother. I have 2 dogs as well. I would say I had a pretty simple life and I love it. I couldn’t ask for better parents or a more supportive brother. My family situation is amazing. Because of my family, I can do things now that in the past I may not have been able to think of doing. I have so many opportunities available to me because of my family. My parents work so hard and are the best things that have ever happened to me. I am blessed to have the amazing family I do today. Because of my family, I am the way I am. I am a strong, happy, and independent person. What would life be like if I had a different family situation? I am imagining this change because I am who I am because of my family. My life would probably be completely different today if I

Every birthday that comes around my parents, both sets of grandparents, and my great grandmother all get together to celebrate. We go to dinner first, then we eat cake and ice cream, followed by opening presents. Every Christmas we open some Christmas presents early in the morning and then eat cinnamon buns for breakfast. We typically rotate between grandparents on who we celebrate with on Christmas Eve and on Christmas day. Also, on every Easter we had made sure to paint eggs the night before and on the 4th of July we go to see fireworks. My brother and I growing up also believed in Santa and the Easter Bunny. My family and I have many traditions, but these are just a few. Would I have still had these traditions if my family situation was different? Maybe I would have, but maybe I wouldn’t have. It’s possible that my parents may not have believed in letting us think there was such things as an Easter Bunny and Santa Claus. We may not have obtained the chance of painting eggs or eating cinnamon buns. I get and got all these experiences because of the way my family

I consider myself lucky. Growing up, a child of the 50’s, afforded me the education of a lifetime, yet I did not recognize it for many years. Life was simple, uncomplicated for a child living in a small town and daydreaming was one of its’ pleasures. It was free, extremely personal, and could be done anywhere, anytime, even in church, for which I admit my guilt. Fuel for daydreams was everywhere, in print, on the radio, television or in the movies.…

When I was little, I was not like the other girls. I had decided to trade my barbies for beetles. My favorite pastime consisted of marching to the empty field next to my house, armed with a butterfly net and a bug cage, to catch grasshoppers. I would use them as bait when I went fishing with my dad, as food for my praying mantis, or as points in a contest with my friends. This fascination has stuck with me as I have grown up.…

Lastly, my value of routine may fade as I grow older and I start retirement, doing whatever I feel like and not trying to set a strict routine for myself, as long as I am able to stay active- mentally and physically. The three things that make me happiest today in my family is the openness of my parents, the friendship between my sister and me, and the trust of everyone in my family. My parents include my sister and me on decisions that affect the entire family, such as, when my dad was in the military, which places we would possibly want to go to, even if we did not get the place we wanted. They also asked our input on punishments and rewards- if my sister or I broke a rule, we were able to have input on the type of punishment we had, such as extra chores or grounding, and my parents would choose the degree at which the punishment is given, such as two weeks or a few hours, as well as rewards for good grades- money, relaxing in chores, or a certain toy. This ability to input my opinion on family matters make me really happy that I have authoritative parents that allow me to express my…
