The Children’s act is a set of laws that are in place to protect the safety and well being of children from the ages of birth to 18. The children’s act of 1989 was updated in 2004 and is now aimed to ensure information is shared between agencies. Legislations say you have to share information or you are in breach of the child protection law which then could end with fines or in serious cases, jail time.

In the Health and Safety of work Act 1974 there is a set list of things that a company should have in place – First Aid attendant, suitable facilities, risk assessment. If any of the health and safety laws in the legislation have been broken then the health and safety executive can issue a fine or prosecute the person responsible.
Tesco’s is a huge organisation so has more than 5 employees so they are required by legalisation to have a written health and safety policy. Their policy is available online for anyone to view. Tesco’s policy is relatively short but it has straight to the point information the reader/employees need. It covers the entire list in the legislation. It’s short and contains all the detail that is needed so this is great because the reader can really easily stay focused on reading the policy and finding what they need. Straight off in the policy they have listed the protected characteristics that are in the equal opportunities act – “Age, Disability, Sex , Sexual Orientation, Race, Religion or Belief , Gender reassignment , Marriage or Civil Partnership , Pregnancy and Maternity” (hscic.gov.uk )by having the characteristics straight away at the beginning this is allowing the readers/employees to know exactly what they are so themselves know their own characteristics that are protected and also everyone else’s. This could also give the company a bit of protection because if someone did break any of the law – not employing someone cause they were gay and they tried to say that they didn’t know not employing someone because of their sexual orientation was a protected characteristic then the company can go straight away to the first page and show them it is one of the first things you read this then stops them from been
