“Real living is living for others.” This quote from Bruce Lee shows how others are more important than yourself. This reflects on the character Reverend Hale from the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller. Reverend Hale is a character that from a selfish person only caring about his work to a person who fights for others. He has such traits as selfishness, suspicious, and culpable ness.
When Reverend Hale is first shown in the play he is a very selfish but studious person. He carries a stack of books to show he is superior to the others around him. Hale comes back to town to try to fix the mess that he has put him and others in,Parris says, “Hear Me. Rebecca have not given me a word this three month since she came. Now she sits with him, and her sister and Martha Corey and two or three others, and he pleads with them, confess their crimes and save their lives”(231).Dramatically, this shows that Hale is trying to do the right thing for the people surrounding him. Hale talks to the sentenced ones and tries to get them to confess so he doesn’t have the culpable ness on him anymore. Hale talks to John, but John denies his confession and rips it into shreds as Judge Danforth calls him out, as while Hale goes to Elizabeth to make John confess so he stays in her life, Hale says,” Woman, plead with him! Woman! It is pride, it is vanity. Be his helper!- What profi him to bleed? shall the dust praise him? Shall the worms declare his truth? Go to him, take his shame away!(240). This shows that Hale really does care about the people being accused at the end of the book because of the culpable ness that he was put through in the later scenes.
