Teaching reading requires an in depth understanding of what comprehension is, how it can be taught and strategies that can be used. Reading comprehension is much more than just reading and understanding. To fully comprehend a text, the reader must work through a three-part process that includes construction, integration and metacognition (Graves, M). The final step of the process, metacognition, is where the readers go back and think about their ideas of the text. During metacognition, the reader must be actively aware of their ideas about the text and think about if the text makes sense. The three-step model is just the surface of reading comprehension, but demonstrates the complexity of what readers must learn and teachers must teach. With each of the steps, there are a variety of strategies that good readers use to decode sentences, form ideas and check for understanding. Reading comprehension is a complex task that only an expert has the knowledge and instructional practice to successfully teach. With comprehension comes the challenging task of motivating students, one that even the best teachers and parents often struggle with. Being able to intrinsically motivate young readers to read is the job of an expert and they key to developing a life long interest in reading. The ability to plan and implement a unique, personalized reading education for each student is another challenge that only an expert is knowledgeable enough to effectively undertake. It is clear through looking at comprehension, motivation and differentiation that teaching students to read is truly a job for an expert. The experts in education are the teachers and therefore, every teacher needs to be instructed on various practices, methods and theories and put them into place to develop an expertise in teaching
