In the text “Untreated Mental Illness”, it says, “Many people struggling with mental health issues are unable to find a therapist they like, or they encounter intolerable side effects associated with the medications they take. But giving up, rather than trying a new strategy, is extremely risky, and can cost you your health, happiness, and even your life.”. People with mental illness get afraid to speak up because of the stigma for starters, but a lot of times when they do speak up, they get unsatisfactory help or drugs that make them sick or make their mental illness worse. Because of this people don’t want to speak up because they don't think help from therapy or drugs will work so they just quietly suffer. Throughout all of Catcher in the Rye, Holden doesn't talk to anyone about what’s wrong with him out of fear of the stigma and that help won’t actually help him. But, there are people on the other side of the argument, people think a thing called Peter Pan Syndrome is what’s wrong. In the text “The Peter Pan Syndrome”, Marty Nemko says, “An unwillingness to get working or stay working when you’re not motivated.” (Nemko 1). This side of the argument is a stigma because the truth is that anxiety and depression actually cause an unwillingness to work, so this side is just is basically trying to find a lighter side to the truth by saying that it’s just laziness, when in reality, it’s a
