Carol W. Greider grew up with many hardships. When she was in first grade, her mother died. She continued to go to school in Davis, where she could easily walk to school. When she was about to go into sixth grade her father got a job in Germany, and she had to move there and attend a school in Germany for her sixth grade year.m She discovered she had Dyslexia and that caused her to have trouble learning and spelling English. She failed her English class when she was in Germany and that made her feel bad about herself. Eventually she moved back to Davis and went back to attending school there. She learned to like school and got A’s in her classes. When she finished high school, she went to college. Her teacher encouraged her to use the science lab, so she did in her freshman year. She thought she wanted to become a Marine Ecologist, but soon realised that that subject was not for her. She learned that she liked watching cells. She first focused on understanding molecules and how they interact and behave. Being able to manipulate molecules and understand how things worked fit the way she thought. Greider discovered how chromosomes are protected by telomeres and enzyme telomerase. Telomerase is the ends of the chromosome. She and one other scientist determined that it was the enzyme that was responsible for telomerase addition. Telomerase is also the key enzyme in cancer and anemia research.
