It might sound simple, but sometimes that is the most important aspect of a story. To give one insight into the dealings, and allow one to make a judgement on what is right and what is wrong. That is what is appreciated most about his narrative. That it was filled with inner-conflict, contemplating and numerous obvious contradictions that resemble the inner turmoil many people face throughout their life. He was a good moral man that people trusted and had his own dealings with capitalism and the slave-market. His good standing with white Europeans and strong faith was why he was so important to the anti-slavery movement and was an affective abolitionist. His baptizing and strong faith gave him a feeling of being equal with the white man. He details how he viewed his freedom as entering into Heaven. He made his story about how he was a heathen in Hell, and that through his faith in God, was granted entrance into Paradise. Paradise of course being equated to Freedom. For White Europeans this gave them a sense that Paradise was in their hands, to give Paradise to the slaves or to deny them it. However, if you pay attention to the news you understand that it is still a very complicated matter. That slavery and racism still effects the psyche of many African Americans today. That’s why it’s the story of Equiano is still important today. It might not be right for someone not black to say this, but many Black people today are playing checkers. If they were to take Equiano as a role model, they would learn how to play chess, because Equiano was the ultimate chess player. Every situation Equiano was put in, he always looked at the totality of a situation, and not just what the next move or two would be. He can be such a strong role model for people today. The people rioting in North Carolina should read Equianos book. Then, they can read about how Equiano entered a system that was designed to enslave him. He then slipped that system and used it to his advantage and eventually after a long game of chess was able to be one of the most effective abolitionists in history.
