Digging the heels of her hands into the small of her back and arching first back and then forward to ease the kinks Dr. Caroline Taylor groaned as the stiffening muscles protested her efforts to loosen them, then ran her hands through her cap of short black hair. She stood at the end of the men's ward surveying the patients lying in the narrow metal beds. Dysentery, an appendix, two leg wounds from farming implements and an assortment of other ills had brought these villagers to the little hospital Dr. Taylor, “Docta Caro”, ran in this nearly forgotten corner of Bukaso. She had just finished rounds in the men's ward and signed off on the various orders for her nurses and still had the women's and children's wards to walk.…
“Why in the world caused you to kill that Charlie guy?” asked the Texans lawyer. “Because that Bryon guy hustled us and took $25.50 by the end of the pool games”, Dirty Dave answered. “ How many games did y'all play to get hustled that much money?” “We only played like four or five games”. “Well, that makes some sense but was it really worth killing that Charlie?”…
Dawn broke to an explosion of bird songs, the cacophony startling Booker awake with a disgruntled groan. Unimpressed by the early morning alarm clock, he angrily pulled his pillow over his head and attempted to drown out the noise. But after several minutes, the humorous fact that the sound easily penetrated through the downy feathers brought a good-natured smile to his lips, and with a resigned sigh, he threw the pillow to the floor and sat up. From across the room, Tom yawned loudly, a sleepy smile spreading across his face.…

It was March 8th 2012, in small city, Coucil Bluffs, Iowa. The nurse was dripping numbing liquids into the blood gushing wound. The only thing I felt was a stabbing pain from the wound and a burning from the numbing medicine. They the nurse started typing on the computer. “Tap your fingers, and tell me if it is numb,” said the Nurse.…
To what extent are modernist works more interested in the inner world of the imagination and subjective perception than the outer world of social life? Discuss with reference to two texts. The works of ‘Miss Brill’ by Katherine Mansfield (1920) and Tonio Kroger by Thomas Mann (1903) include fundamental modernist characteristics, such as a fragmented structure, free indirect discourse and an epiphany. These literary techniques help shape the struggle both authors present between the inner world of the imagination and the outer world of social life.…
Miss Brill vs ‘The Man’ A first impression is said to be one of the most important moments in a relationship, yet it is most often based on little knowledge of who the person truly is. Likewise, premature judgement is made in both “Identities” by W. D. Valgardson, and “Miss Brill” by Katherine Mansfield. Miss Brill is faced with prejudice as she is alone in the “Jardins Publiques” whereas the protagonist from identities is shot to death because of his ‘false identity.’ One's self-perception differs from reality and often one only learns this reality through the collective perceptions of the world with which we interact.…
life is its unfair sometimes but there isn't much we can do about it we can just think about what she could of done and move on. We kept going and finally the day came where we reached the border and crossed over to Texas. You would think this is where it all ends, but it's not. We reached Texas and one of my uncles friend was waiting for us.…
Coby looked at the seemingly unbreakable wall of skin with complete disbelief, sitting there bewildered with the fact that he could not pass through Coby decided to see if he could bite through it, then tear it, then cut it with little to no success. Coby decided to maybe try his luck accessing some of the other, more vulnerable parts of the body. As Coby was making his way up the neck to try his luck jumping into a wad of stomach acid he passing dried up mucus and other harmless pathogens out of the corner of his eye he spotted a large red lump not too far away, upon closer inspection; Coby could see that it wasn’t just any red lump it was a very deep cut. Coby then turned around to see a very fast moving wall of tears an saliva, most likely from the host after suffering this injury. Coby ran at an amazing speed, dodging the droplets flicking off of the wave and avoiding dried up mucus.…
Miss Brill's escapism induces her autistic behavior; her deliberate indifference originated from her unwillingness to accept the reality, stimulates her imagination. Miss Brill's ego wants to get through the society; however, she is unable to fit in the society. The struggle among Miss Brill's multiple personalities are hidden beneath her pretence usually, but the reveal of oppression bursts when there is a stimulus strong enough to damage her deception.…
When Sedaris finally finds himself taking his Mother’s advice to check himself, the one thing that distracts him from this self-reflection is the television. For example, when he says “here is a boy sitting on a bed, his mouth smeared with chocolate. He's a human being, but also he's a pig, surrounded by trash and gorging himself so that others may be denied. Were this the only image in the world, you'd be forced to give it your full attention, but fortunately there were others. This stagecoach, for instance, coming round the bend with a cargo of gold.…
Most of Delilah's presumptions with regards to Noel were duly disproved once she crossed the threshold to his quarters. Had he portrayed antagonism, he would be met with indifference; tartness with civility; detachment with sympathy. Yet, with a conjunction of diffidence, self-deprecation and courteousness, a catch-22 met her at the helm. For someone who was all but reclusive whenever their session with Dr. Walt commenced, this somewhat accommodating acceptance was a pleasant turn of events. It scarcely evicted her mind from the gutter however, for it seemed like they favored the real estate there and would hardly budge for anything else when there was half-clothed man in her presence.…
The first thing he was willing to consider was the possibility of Genjustu, it was the first thing that came to mind, obviously. He wasn't convinced, though. Why was easy to understand. He was an Uchiha and it was by no means a simple task to trick one of his kind with something they considered themselves to be unbeaten in. Genjutsu might not be his personal forte but he was no rookie in that regard either.…
Requeese wakes up to a faint sound emitting from his television. He grunts as his slim and translucent body rolls over to turn off the television, room is pitch black besides a tiny bit of the room that is lit up by his television. He struggles to find the remote with his tired, black baggy eyes as he feels like he is strapped to his bed, but after a few minutes he finally gets out of his bed and turns off the television. He slowly gets back into his bed and he is sleep deprived. He continuously rolls over trying to find a comfortable spot, then the television turns on and he hears static sounds launching from his television.…
