Black Like Me Thesis

In this essay, we will be focusing on the essential connections between the main characters of three books, and their relation to the course literature, ethnicity and immigration. The title of these books are: The Joy Luck Club, Things Fall Apart and Black Like Me. Let’s begin with the main character of The Joy Luck Club, Jing Mei. Who is Jing Mei? The daughter of Suyuan Woo, Mei is the youngest of her late mother’s three children. When Mei was a child living in China, life was pretty rough because her family were very poor. So her mother became more active and created a social club where she held gatherings for her close friends and family in order to raise money to immigrate abroad. Woo decided to name this social club, The Joy Luck Club, because the club was so financially successful. And eventually, Woo had enough finances to immigrate to America from China, with her daughter Mei and her husband. She ended up settling soon after arrival, but died shortly after. Due to this unfortunate situation, Mei automatically takes her mother’s place at the Joy Luck Club. The Joy Luck Club is an exclusive club, for close native born Chinese immigrants. In things Fall Apart, Okonkwo is the main character of this work of Literature. Okonkwo’s ethnical background lies within the Igbo village where unity, respect and love, loyalty and family is above all. Okonkwo is a well-known warrior who embodies strength throughout his entire life, up until his death. As a child growing up in the Igbo village, he was very poor and due to his father’s lack of strength and work ethic, his family was always frowned upon. In fear of looking weak like his father, Okonkwo tried his very best to establish a fruitful, meaningful life.
