In October, 1929, the stock market crashed which resulted in thousands of Americans losing their jobs. Many people began losing their homes because they could no longer pay off their mortgages. “Industries could not hire workers because there was no market for their goods. There was no market because they had no money to buy goods. The workers had no money because industries cannot hire them.” (Rosentreter, pg. 276) Most people believe that recovering from the Great Depression was a result from Roosevelt’s New Deal. The New Deal was a sequence of programs that ratified in the United States between the years of 1933 and 1938. This included laws that were passed by congress and executive orders from President Franklin Roosevelt. The Con- Con is known as one of the most significant political events in Michigan history. Where a new state constitution would be written and many new laws would be put in place. The Con- Con lead to the expansion of governmental powers and made it so the governor and the lutenant governor would have to work as a team. Among other postwar events the Walk of Freedom was another notable one. This was a civil rights march that took place in Detroit, Michigan. It had over 125,000 people and at the time was the largest civil rights demonstration in history. Martin Luther King Jr was present during this march and gave a speech prior to his famous “I have a dream” speech. The 1960’s would lead to many great things.
