Each year, members of the community gather at the HAPpy Museum, a night full of exhibits by Human Anatomy and Physiology (HAP) students. The exhibits show how beautiful and delicate the human body is. Instead of making it another assignment, Dr. Heavers encouraged students like myself to “curate” the museum and gain both valuable education and valuable leadership experience. The students connected with prominent community figures, advertised the museum, and ran the event. Presenting and enriching the information changed me more than reading the information out of a textbook would have.…

I am interested in applying to Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center-Paul L. Foster School of Medicine in hopes to first enhance my own knowledge, exposure, and understanding of socially and culturally diverse settings; I aim to become more aware of differences found between individuals and how recognition of these variances can have a positive impact on communication. This increased awareness would allow for me to work more effectively alongside other health care professionals. Furthermore, I would implement all of my acquired knowledge to a diverse community in the form of efficient health care. I firmly believe that, in order to provide exceptional health care services to patients, a physician must be culturally competent and capable…

I’ve had a variety of exposures to healthcare. I’ve worked in locations ranging from medically isolated villages in rural Africa to urban clinics in the United States, and I’ve been guided by physicians representing disciplines such as family medicine, infectious disease, and pediatrics. Just as diversity is essential to medicine, a diverse range of exposures is equally important for a medical student. The reason I am most interested in the Columbia-Bassett program is because it will provide me with a unique opportunity to learn about health care in two very different environments. This will enrich my capacity to work as a physician.…

    a. Throughout my career as a pharmacy technician, I was exposed to a diverse clientele; farmers, scholar, dispossessed, retired and everything in between. Each day work required me to interact with new people, breaking the boarders of my comfort zone. As a result, I came to the realization that our differences gave us a spectrum of perspectives. Diversity is the product of the subtle differences in personalities, views, and life experience.…

I want to become a physician-scientist because I want to work at the interface between basic science research, which has the power to elucidate new knowledge, and clinical medicine, which has the ability to translate scientific discoveries to a deliverable form that can directly help the patients in need. For three years, I studied the role of tumor microenvironment on breast cancer metastasis in Dr. Semenza’s laboratory at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. As I studied the role of Hypoxia-inducible factor on integrin expression and subsequent cell motility, I learnt that cancer is a multi-faceted disease that consists of a web of multiple biological mechanisms as well as other arenas of science. Having exposed myself to…

Biochemistry Biochemistry is a branch of science concentrated on living organisms and their chemical processes. It has become a household name for itself in modern history as more and more developments occur and has encouraged scientist to not only pursue a medical career, but has branched out into research and bio-engineering to create a better life for an individual. In all, the area uncovers the way of the future and has found itself as a major part of science. Without the subject a lot of the inventions for better health, such as, vitamin D, or the way our metabolic system works would be unexplored therefore, would be as if the medieval ages were upon us as one did not fully comprehend how contaminated hands would effect an open wound.…
