George Clymer was on the committee to design the U.S. Constitution. He signed both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. He served the Congress for three years each time in a different position. He went on a mission to negotiate peace with the indians in the Western Pennsylvania and as he was going to general Neville’s house that was outside of Fort Pitt and it was a couple miles from Fort Pitt on his way there he came to an fork in the road where it branched off in two directions and not for his wise choice, he would have been killed by a tomahawk in Pittsburgh on a mission. He went on another mission this time to investigate a report from general Washington he was told that the army had not tasted vegetables since the congress changed the regulations for the army and he went back with steps to send more food to the hunger army. When congress heard that the British were coming to capture Philadelphia they fled to Baltimore leaving behind George Clymer and Robert Morris and George Walton to do the work and at that time he was on the committees for the board of war and the board of treasure. One of his greatest service was when he helped forge to make the U.S. Constitution and another greatest service was when he helped solved a giant problem when the larger states wanted more lawmakers than the smaller states wanted and because of his great compromise that is how he got the name the great compromiser. He signed all four of the laws the Articles of Association, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the U.S. Constitution. He took a firm stand in the colonial rights and was on many committees and was even on the war committee who raised money for the congress to use for war materials and for the things the soldiers and the army needed to win the war with and survive. Then in 1789 he was elected for the U.s. House of Representatives. Then in 1791 after Samuel Johnson resigned from U.S. Senator and then the Connecticut legislature appointed Roger Sherman to fill the seat and he served Senator there until his death on July 23, 1793. Rev. Dr. Edwards said this about Roger Sherman, he was a wise and good man and trusted patriot. Thomas Jefferson said this about Roger Sherman, he had more common sense than any other man I know of. Washington always treated Roger Sherman with the most respect.
