During this section of the story, Pi is beginning to lose hope. However, this quotation proves that he still had (deep down) the will and determination to survive. In this section, Pi continues to practice religious rituals. When he faces despair, he looks to religion to fill him once again with hope. An example of this would be how also on page 255, Pi shouts statements that refer to himself as God ("THIS IS GOD'S HAT!" and "THIS IS GOD'S CAT!" for example). In conclusion, quotations such as the few mentioned (as well as chapter 74 in general) prove that belief and determination save lives.
