The e-cigarette industry, the tobacco industry, their supporters and other researchers have an opposing point of view that e-cigarettes are an effective stop smoking aide and should be promoted as an effective tool in reducing tobacco product related deaths. The biggest piece of data that they repeatedly claim as evidence that supports their claims and point of view is a 2010-2012 survey of smokers in Hawaii that came to the conclusion that smokers who tried e-cigarettes as a NRT, were more serious about quitting smoking than others who had not. It often reminds me of the snake oil dealers of the nineteenth century. Charlatans who claim to have a miracle substance that can cure all that ails you. They are marketed as a life-saving cure all for smokers trying to quit and as a harmless alternative for those who do not want to smoke tobacco cigarettes. It really is quite incredible. But all of their claims are based on purely anecdotal evidence and many studies that were not held to rigorous standards, or based on what whatever the manufacturer wants to say to promote their product. E-cigarette manufacturers want their products to be seen as a positive thing, helping rid the world of the evils and health problems caused by smoking tobacco cigarettes.
