These antibiotics are put into the livestock’s food or water. These antibiotics are a hormone that is fed to help the animal gain weight faster for less food they eat. However, the FDA(Food and Drug Administration) is trying to limit the use of these drugs that are being used to enhance food production. William Flynn, DVM, MS, deputy director for science policy at FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine(CVM) stated, “ We need to be selective about the drugs we use in animals and when we use them,” In other words we need to use them only when there is no other option. William Flynn went on by saying, “Antimicrobial resistance may not be completely preventable, but we need to do what we can, to slow it down.” When these animals need these drugs to make them grow faster, the producer will need to get the veterinarian to give it to them. This is because the FDA is doing their best to slow down the production of these resistant microorganisms.
