People believe that the humans in charge of zoos have a warped, personal morality of how animals are treated due to their own greed. Therefore, instead of humans centering zoos on proper exhibits on animal needs, they rather rely on human priority over nature. In Jeffery Cohn's, "Do Elephants Belong in Zoos? ," he explains how zoos do not provide enough space for the largest walking mammals. Elephants need to walk up to fifty miles a day, or else they can get lethal foot infections.…

John Alroy associates the lack of spaces with the necessity to go through the effort of caring for species that are not endangered or extinct, such as primates, carnivores and ungulates (930). These species are mostly expensive to maintain in captivity (Alroy 930), and it is a waste of money considering there are some animals that have to be protected from the extinction. However, these animals serve as the main drivers of attendance as people visit zoo mostly to see and interact with them, and their interest in a zoo without them may be low thus reducing the funding and decreasing the quality…

I have not been to zoos often, but when I have I have never witnessed animals in cages, particularly not the generic metal bar cages that are often seen in movies. Animals are kept in natural exhibits, with glass or open areas for viewing. Laidlaw eventually concluded that zoos should either improve their bad habits, or face losing their jobs. I am in agreement with this statement, however, I feel that most zoos do not have to face this choice as they are doing fine as it…

Animals should not live a meaningless life trapped inside a cage. Everyday all around the world animals are deprived of the amazing life they could live in the wild. They are taken away from their families and natural environments to do tricks and be trapped in cages at the zoo and they are unhappy. Some critics may argue it is easier to keep animals alive when they are being monitored in a zoo or aquarium. These helpless animals are suffering physically and mentally due to their experiences and it must be stopped.…

Though, I know the establishment of zoos gave people the opportunity to see and learn about different animals from around the world, they play a role in animal conservation and education. It is a way of preserving species of animals that may become extinct in the future. What we do not realize is by keeping these animals in confinement, it is an act of cruelty and we do not know what takes place behind the scenes of the shows and displays of these animals. Studies have indicated that confined animals living with uncommon social groups, different climates, and unsuitable diets, unlike animals living in the wild, can lead to animals suffering from psychological and physical problems such as zoochosis. Zoochosis is a kind of behavior common in…

Red pandas, from the same zoo, died after ingesting rat poison. There are requirements that are made from the Animal Welfare Act but many zoo’s standards aren’t always adequate or enforced. While conditions have improved and habitats have looked more attractive, there hasn’t been an improvement in terms of space.…

In these zoos, animals are treated cruelly and are killed for no reason, animals go through mental/psychological disorders, and lack the nutritious values that are only given to them in the wild. These reasons prove that zoos need to be shut down and these helpless animals deserve to live and thrive in the environment and habitat they come from. It is disturbing to think of how positive zoos are seen and how they are a popular attraction for people of all ages. Next time people go to a zoo, they should look closely at these animals and see the misery and depression in their…

There are certainly advantages to be gained by animals which are kept in captivity. Many zoos and safari parks employ veterinary surgeons to ensure that necessary medical attention is always available for the animals. In addition, nutrition experts are employed, so the animals have a ready supply of food appropriate to their needs. All of this means that life expectancy, for some creatures at least, is longer in captivity than in the wild; for example, wild squirrels live for an average of three years, whereas their captive counterparts live to be twelve years old.…
