The lonely ones wanders the ranch desperate for attention that they even exists. In the novel it takes place on a farm, where migrant workers George and Lennie have come to be farm workers. George and Lennie have a plan to own their own land and live off the fatta the land. In the novel Of Mice and Men, author John Steinbeck puts the four outcasts together to show their similarities and to portray the theme that the four outcasts are lonely and desperate for attention.
