Oregon has a marvelous agriculture including many crops and animals. Oregon has two main crops; hazelnuts and pears. Hazelnuts are the state nut. Hazelnuts are high in protein and fiber. 95% of America’s hazelnuts are produced in Oregon. Another important crop is the pear, the state’s fruit. Oregon is 2nd in the nation for pear production. Cows are an important part of Oregon’s agriculture. Oregon is in the top five for milk quality. Cows produce 6.5 gallons of milk everyday! Milk is also the state beverage.

Oregon’s state bird is the Western Meadowlark. The Western Meadowlark has a black and white striped head and a long pointed bill. It has yellow cheeks and a yellow throat. The bird also possesses a black V on its breast. The Western Meadowlark was chosen as the state bird in 1927 by Oregon’s school children in a statewide poll. They usually live in grasslands, prairies, and meadows. These birds avoid heavy shrubs and wooded edges. They look for their diet beneath soil and grounds. Their diet consists mainly of beetles, cutworms, grasshoppers, sowbugs, snails, and spiders.

The trail was made in the 19th century because of the migration, like movement of pioneers to western America. The trail goes from Missouri to Oregon to California. Pioneers traveled in farm wagons on the Oregon Trail. The farm wagons were approximately 4 feet by 10 feet. Thousands of pounds of food were carried on the farm wagons. The pioneers used cotton covers with linseed oil to keep the rain out. They also had toolboxes, water containers and spare axles. There were many deaths on the Oregon Trail, such as when people got run over by wagons, accidentally shot guns at fellow peers, cholera, half-cocked pistols, bodies left on the road and people buried in shallow
