The painting has various shades of green, yellow and blue. The sky is a light blue that has clouds that were painted in a circular pattern and it takes up about 1/3 of the picture. “The sky appears to stand a good several inches behind the horizon, the plain looks gradational by different level of green colors” (Kao). Kao is talking about how even though the picture is one just one dimensional that us as humans can tell where the fields are separated and that the sky is not attached to the wheat fields but it looks to us as…
When The painting American Gothic was painted by Grant Wood in 1930, it had become an instant classic. Most people had seen this painting as something that was considered satirical. However his goal for this painting was to show the good values that Midwest America held during the time of the great depression. I will begin to criticizing this work of art by describing what I see in the painting itself. I will then move on into how I interpret this particular painting, and finally I will then give you my evaluative prescription of this painting.…
The artwork I chose is, The Scream by Edvard Munch, which was created in 1893. This artwork has been described, as a “Mona Lisa for our time.” The composition of The Scream is an oil painting on cardboard. Furthermore, the style of this painting is Expressionism. To emphasize, Edvard Munch used lines, and colors to depict human emotions.…
Gothic Imprint in Modern Times The Gothic style was truly a humanist philosophy that spread throughout Europe in the mid 1300s. It affected both the artists and its patrons. The effects of such now ripple thru modern times. The Limbourg brothers written and painted works in Gothic times are a most welcome legacy in today’s world.…
Half Caste child (1957) This artwork depicts a young white girl in clinging to an older black man while a black woman is crying in the background. This painting has a historical theme because it shows a child of mixed decent during a time when this was a bad thing. The lack of care she seems to get from the older man helps show this. This painting was painted after the Australian assimilation project when aboriginal people of mixed decent were to be assimilated into white society wether they wanted to or not.…
Medieval Church: Gothic Cathedral The architecture of the medieval Gothic cathedrals is one of the greatest glories of European culture. Since the twelfth century, Gothic art and literature in Europe had become very popular, and were soon brought to perfection in the thirteenth century. The first Gothic cathedral was the abbey of Saint-Denis (built around 1140 and 1150 ce); it was inspired by the famous Abbot Suger. This cathedral was burned down twice and without the reconstruction of it, Notre Dame, and all the cathedrals in the future would not have been established the way they were. Saint-Denis started a revolution of cathedrals in the Gothic style.…
Gothic literature combines ordinary life with the supernatural. It is used to show the chaos that occurs when reality and supernatural combine. Specific elements of gothic literature are used not only in written works, but in movies. Edward Scissorhands is a movie that incorporates gothic elements. Edward is a man that was created by a scientist, but the scientist dies before he is able to put human hands onto Edward.…
It was very late at night. I was not a hundred percent sure what time it was. If I were to guess, I would say that it was 11:30. As I was thinking to myself, I said "Wow it is really late I need to go to bed". As I was getting ready to lie down I heard a loud bang.…
The artwork I choose is Pebbles around a Hole. The artist is Andy Goldsworthy. He was born in Britain in 1956. He created Pebbles around a Hole in 1987. The medium used is chromogenic print.…
There are several characteristics based on literature Gothic to which the novel Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” belongs that can be traced in the alien quadrilogy. To start with, the very setting of the atmosphere created by alien in the novel are more close or similar to those used during the late 19th century Gothic novels. In the Typical representation of the house in the novel Gothic, the modernity of the setting is coupled with what Chris Baldick defines as “a claustrophobic sense of enclosure in Space” as well with what Mario Praz calls “an anxiety with no possibility of the space”. In the novel, Dracula, the character of Jonathan discovers the ruined chapel in which the count sleeps by descending several unexplored stairways and exploring the…
Gothic Analysis Essay Witchcraft, magic and occultism, such known and mentioned subjects, especially in Gothic literature. Stories that have been documented overtime have become mere entertainment to today’s public, constantly incorporated into movies, remade stories (with happier ending, like Disney’s interpretations) but it was only a few decades ago that these stories tormented any believers thoughts from time to time. In these myths, the characters whether being accused, acquainted, or simply an observer either know of a source of magic or ponder upon the idea of from which the power is created or where it appears from. Although there are stories of good magic, society often directs their attention to the darker forces…
People often try to feel as a part of something, but what happens when a persons views and beliefs are completely different from the norm? In order to feel understood, these people will seek out others that share in their ideas and feelings, often times forming a subculture. The Frankfurt and Birmingham schools of thought analyze popular culture in an attempt to examine the formation and the purpose of subcultures in society. Through personal observation and interviews I was able to analyze the Gothic subculture. In my research I focus on the styles, the beliefs, and rules of the Gothic subculture while applying the Frankfurt school and Hebdige’s theories on subculture to determine whether they pose a threat to society.…
To what extent was the development of Christian art and architecture influenced by the art and architecture of classical Rome? In Christian art and architecture there exists many parallels between it and that of classical Rome, this could be due to the fact that Christianity emerged during the Roman Empire. Christians, like the Romans, valued the use of art for personal and cultural expressions, along with their art forms such as fresco, relief sculptures, mosaics – as seen in many churches from the era, and decorative tombs known as sarcophagi – this can also be linked back to the Egyptian Empire. Christian architecture also borrowed directly from that of the Romans. Since Christianity was prohibited at its time of inception, they were unable…
Conventional versus contemporary. Paranormal versus verism. Charles Dickens’ “The Signalman” and Roald Dahl’s “Lamb to the Slaughter”, two pieces of Gothic prose, are different yet, in various ways, similar. Written with the creation of suspense and tension in mind, both stories are tied with a common theme of insanity.…
Throughout this course I have gained more of an appreciation for artwork and the artists that create them. I have also gained an appreciation for the people that try to define what art is in general or more specifically what makes good art. We have read great thinkers and their philosophies on this, and the fact that even people of such great intelligence can disagree on the subject proves how challenging it can be. By reading the opinions of these great thinkers, and by discussing their thought with our class, I feel I am in a much better place as to define what makes good art myself. I define art as anything created by someone that inspires another to appreciation.…
