To start off, it is important to inform that an afterlife is exactly what it states to be: a life after, or a life after the known life, so to speak. Many people and early writers believed in an afterlife, all of which had their own perceptions. For instance, the Christians point of view on an afterlife would be heaven or hell, while someone with a different point of view would see an afterlife as somewhere they reunite with their loved ones. There are many different perceptions of an afterlife, but all find to have a purpose and an importance, especially to Jonathan Edwards and Edward Taylor. God was still a huge reason and importance to the afterlife, and the choices you make in this life sure enough will still effect the life to come. When the importance of an afterlife is brought to the attention of Taylor, there are rewards to come for those who live their life now, wisely. Salvation is a choice, but is an important decision in the chance of having a good afterlife. Get saved, go to heaven, basically. Here is one for you, the procedure that took place to make others believe in this afterlife. Jonathan Edwards pointed his finger at hell, more than heaven. While Edward Taylor decided to keep his eyes on heaven, but be known the existence of hell. Taylor gave powerful imagery of the loving God and mischievous devil, he made know the victory and grace, as well as salvation from the one most high. Edwards gave dark pictures of a god-abandoned place with fire and damnation and a grave image of a devil who crushed souls, all at the command of an angry god.
