This quote is showing that he is going to accuse many people of communism because they believe there enemies are not outside of their city but it shows that the people that helped build the city are communist trying to destroy this town from the inside out. This quote has to do with how easily a rumor can be spread, rumors can come either out of imagination or hate towards one person. Many people come up with rumors to not only hurt somebody’s self esteem but it hurts the person image in the town, or place they live in. Whenever Mrs. Putnam starts to think later in the play she accuses rebecca nurse of killing all of her babies instead of thinking god did this to her she is trying to blame someone.
